Sin and the sinned!

A temple in south india is going to undergo a purification process because an non Hindu actress offered her prayers.
Source : chennaionline.com

Come on, how ridiculous can it get!!! Am stumped. How can ppl be so narrow minded? Traditions have to be upheld i agree but who gave the right to these ppl - the so called keepers of the tradition - to decide who enters the premises and who doesnt. And to go to such extremes, its such a shock to me.

In the olden days when these rules were made, the caste system was so important so no one opposed this. But now, in every field ppl of every race and caste work shoulder to shoulder. The temple became impure just because that lady is a non-Hindu or rather a born Christian (which btw is generations of branch away hindus following christianity).

What about those ppl who are murderers, rapist, cheaters, robbers, wife-beaters and what not sinner Hindus who visit the temple....? This applies to any society, any religion that discriminates ppl from other races. I want to ask these authorities who decided this "purification process" was necessary just one -thing - does this mean these ppl dont allow anything non-Hindu in their lives. Dont think so ...then why this discrimination?

Its my god and me. Who can come in-between us? Do I need a middle man/woman to tell me the importance of god in life? No i dont. It doesnt matter which god u pray to, it is only important that you r sincere in what u do and ur intentions are good.

How silly & how narrow-minded too. It is the heights. When will ppl ever change their attitude from these sort of petty issues? Like u mentioned there r many other ppl with such dirty minds who also enter the temple. How do they intend purifying the temple with such elements present?

Well, you`re right, Madhu.. People never realize that India is so strongly in an era of globalization, yet again, that upholding such traditions would only do harm to the maintenance and upkeep of the beautiful temples all over the country. Everyone should visit and places of worship should be open for all. What is the use of talking about communal harmony, if we dont open our hearts to it..?
A valid point you raise here..!

Interesting post! A few quick comments
There are some traditions and conventions that have been followed since centuries. Some of them, which were found to be incombatible with the civilised world (like sati, child marriage etc), have been done away with in due the course of time. However, many other practices, which does not find favour with some sections of the society, still exists. Now the question arises as to who will determine the present day relevance of such practices. A lot many people, especiallly from the youger generations detest practices like restrictive entry to temples, animal sacrifices etc. But the number of people supporting such practices are also sizeable in number. It will be difficult to sell the logic of doing away with rituals that does not cause grievous insult to any category of people. Moreover, abolition of such practices may also result in hurting the sentiments of many who hold such practices close to their heart.

This is one of the silliest piece of news have heard!
and unable to understand why something done a decade ago was bought out now by the actress??

Southpaw, Has to be me : call it silly or digusting, it is the fact. There are still ppl who believe in such discrimination. I dont know what kind of revolution will bring a change.

srijith - i agree with u, places of worship should be free for all. How can u restrict something connected to god? Can they stop this very same actress from praying at her home? They cant. What they r doing is superficial, none lose or gain by this act.

jithesh - i agree that traditions are to be followed. also agree that the majority might feel offended by such a revolt....but that doesnt mean they are doing the right thing.

To each his own ideas and values, someday the majority will definitely become minority. No law or protest is going to bring this about, but silently the change is happening. One more person will start thinking and soon acting about all this. Hopefully like sati and child marriage such meaningless rituals will also vanish.

anand - this incident happened just a few days back in Kerela. It does sound silly to us, but to those ppl it would have been like the whole world turned upside down. LOL.

I agree tht no one should come in between God and you. Places of worship are mediums where you can be more at peace.

Regards Shabari mala, I heard this news 3 weeks ago. Now the actress in question I guess said she was in the temple around 20 years ago and that she touched the deity.

The temples officials say it is not possible for such an incident to hav occured and nor do they think the place is "polluted".

My first question-
1)Why is she bringing this up after 20 years. She feel guilty now, its her problem and she should be more guilty to make a mess of this.

2) You cant enter the temple after child bearing age which is set at 10 for women. I have been to Shabari Mala 15 years ago and I know the kind of security they have. It is impossible for anyone to go there and have slept over there or what ever and then touched the deity. It is just the most bizzare nonsense I can comprehend.

Having said that, the temple has set some rules which has been followed since time immemorial and this time is not just yesterday or today but hundreds of years ago. Why did some one have to breach, the same as its not her personal temple. It is a commmunal place where millions of devotees go. She is causing the stir here to make the place look demeaning to stupid people, the aam junta.

The temple authorities donot see or think that a doomsday has occured in the past so many years so wht was this ladies big fat problem.

I too did think why do they have these restrictions, why did I have to wear black but it is none of my saying as no one forces me to go there. I go there on the terms set and no one can question that as it has been followed for years, not only because of caste system but several other easons which I cant explain via a comment to you. You need to be under a very high level umbrella to know the reasons.

Also, we have several family temples in Kerala, I come from an ancestral home so I do have these temples. We just abolished the practice that low castes cannot enter the temple premises. So I am not holding anything against any caste. But if some one told me they managed to go and touch the deity I really would consider that person insane and in thirst of media attention and other devious end results as tht is practically not possible...

We have pastors, priests who perform certain functions and there r more reasons to the same apart from caste. Why are there nuns and fathers who practice celibacy? We cant question all these things but accept it and be logial but someone taking crap like wht the lady just did is beyond me as the security there is overwhelming, if you have gone there you will know tht at every step you are being watched and monitored and the talk is nothing short of gibberish to ignite minds who are emotional about such things and take it for face value tht if someone touched something, it is impure..Nothing is impure but the talk is baseless...

As per the news you mentioned, the stance has changed considerably from wht the initial statement was several weeks ago. Wht do I beleive? Or should i just go and shut the traps of ppl who want to create communal disharmony by making such statements.

We have to be smarter to differenciate preety issues from the people who make such petty issues as the country is not full of people who understand that of the generation we are in. You cant hurt the sentiment by planting some cock n bull story and i believe it is a big cock n bull story here. I condemn the action of this story.

I know you woul dnot agree to anything I have said , but well, I say wht I see, wht I know from the temples we have and still manage after so many hundreds of years and the testimonials from the Shabari Mala officials.

starry, ekta - true. even after such great leaps made by our country, some blind beliefs do remain. If someone is happy praying to ur god, shouldnt u be proud. Instead ppl r insulting her.

scribblez - wow! that's a big comment :) and strong too.

First thing u too seem to be mixing this with the older issue. The one am referring to is regd Meera Jasmine entering Raja Rajeshwara temple in Kannur last week. Refer http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1734037,000900020003.htm

Regd the incident u have mentioned. I too agree with u, in Sabrimala it is next to impossible for a woman to have entered the holy shrine and touched the idol. Its like fantasy!! I dont believe this. I know for sure that the temple observes its rules very strictly and has no exceptions for anyone.

Hey i respect all religions and observe all that is necessary to maintain the respect of the shrine. Plz dont think i disrespect any of the holy places. i think i dont agree with is the baseless discrimination. If i am required to dress appropriately, then i will. There are traditions and rules to be followed and I have no issues following them. But there are certain things I dont like, esp if someone discriminated based on caste or creed.

It is so good to know u have abolished such a discriminating practise. I dont believe in castes.

I think by now u are clear abt what exactly am referring to. let me know if u have any issues, we'll discuss privately.

scribblez - no prbs. happy that we r in understanding.

now the dress code is a big topic in itself. i believe the reason its in place is to avoid any kind of distraction. good thing but ppl shouldnt take it overboard. if u r decently dressed, dont think the dress matters then.

Dont want distraction...Mi how silly does tht sound to me...Cant even comprehend..And in wht manner is something close like a pant or salwar going to create a stir...Sarees r sometime more revealing and besides, its up to the people if they get distracted or not, or is this distraction for the Dewaswom members or for Guruvayoor Appan itself...its so silly I say.
